Dopo tanti tentativi (5 secondi posti e sei podi totali) e tanta sfortuna (un successo sfumato due anni fa a cinque minuti dalla fine) la Toyota ha vinto la 24 Ore di Le Mans 2018: l’equipaggio composto dallo spagnolo Fernando Alonso, dallo svizzero Sébastien Buemi e dal giapponese Kazuki Nakajima ha riportato sul gradino più alto del podio della più famosa corsa endurance del mondo una Casa automobilistica non europea dopo 27 anni.
La TS050 Hybrid ha dominato la gara francese (anche perché quest’anno la Toyota è stata l’unica Casa ufficiale presente nella classe regina LMP1) restando in testa per tutta la corsa e realizzando una doppietta grazie alla seconda piazza ottenuta dal britannico Mike Conway, dal nipponico Kamui Kobayashi e dall’argentino José María López. In terza posizione la Oreca del team Rebellion guidata dall’elvetico Mathias Beche, dal francese Thomas Laurent e dallo statunitense Gustavo Menezes.
Dopo nove anni un equipaggio composto interamente da piloti con un passato in F1 si è aggiudicato la 24 Ore di Le Mans mentre era dal 1972 (Graham Hill) che un campione del mondo di Formula 1 non trionfava sul circuito della Sarthe.
Per quanto riguarda le categorie minori segnaliamo il facile successo in LMP2 della Oreca del team G-Drive (quinta assoluta con i francesi Andrea Pizzitola e Jean-Éric Vergne e il russo Roman Rusinov) e la supremazia della Porsche 911 RSR tra le GT. Primo posto in GTE Pro con la vettura ufficiale in livrea rosa guidata dal danese Michael Christensen, dal francese Kevin Estre e dal belga Laurens Vanthoor e successo in GTE Am per la scuderia Dempsey-Proton e l’equipaggio formato dal francese Julien Andlauer, dall’australiano Matt Campbell e dal tedesco Christian Ried.
